What a gelatin silver print is, and why its appearance still lives on in digital photography
In texts about classic black-and-white photography, one repeatedly encounters terms such as “silver gelatin”, “gelatin silver print” or simply “silver print”. They sound venerable, slightly mysterious and sufficiently complicated to lend even an ordinary photograph the immediate aura of a museum archive.
Yet the term initially describes a photographic process. A gelatin silver print is a black-and-white image made on light-sensitive photographic paper. A thin layer of gelatin contains silver salts that react to light. After exposure, the paper is chemically developed, fixed and washed. The dark areas of the finished image consist of finely distributed metallic silver.
The image, therefore, was not printed onto the paper with black ink. It was created by light and a chemical transformation within the photographic layer.
For much of the twentieth century, this process shaped our idea of what a black-and-white photograph should look like: deep blacks, luminous highlights, finely graduated greys and a surface that could be glossy, satin or matte, depending on the paper.
When we try to give a digital photograph the appearance of a gelatin silver print today, we are not simply imitating an old material. We are referring to more than a century of photographic visual culture.
Silver and gelatin
The name describes the process’s two essential components. Silver forms the image itself. Gelatin serves as the transparent binding layer in which the light-sensitive silver compounds are distributed and held on the paper.
“Gelatin silver” therefore describes neither a stylistic filter nor a metallic, silver-coloured surface. It refers to the material construction of the photograph.
A digital black-and-white photograph may closely resemble such a print. If it is produced with pigment inks on modern fine-art paper, however, it remains a pigment print. The name of the process depends on what actually happened—not on what the result would like to resemble.
A horse does not become a zebra merely because someone paints stripes on it.
How the process emerged
Silver compounds played a central role in the earliest photographic processes. It was known that certain silver salts darkened when exposed to light. The challenge was to control this reaction and make the resulting image permanent.
During the nineteenth century, various solutions were developed. Salted paper, albumen paper, collodion, platinum and palladium printing all possessed their own surfaces, tonalities and characteristics.
Albumen paper, which remained widespread for many years, used egg white as its binding agent. Industrial production required substantial quantities of it. The history of photography is rich in noble artistic ambitions, although the background occasionally smelled like a remarkably large kitchen.
In 1871, the English physician Richard Leach Maddox described a process in which light-sensitive silver salts were suspended in gelatin and coated onto glass plates. These gelatin dry plates could be prepared in advance, stored and used later.
Previously, photographers working with wet plates had to coat their glass plates immediately before taking a photograph, expose them while still wet and develop them at once. Landscape photography was less a pleasant walk with a camera than a modest military exercise in logistics.
Gelatin silver papers came into general use during the 1880s. The developed-out variety became the principal process for black-and-white photographic prints during the early decades of the twentieth century and remained so until the rise of digital photography.
When photography devoured silver
The word “silver” in gelatin silver should be taken quite literally. Film, photographic paper, X-ray material and motion-picture film consumed substantial quantities of the metal.
The occasionally repeated claim that most of the silver mined during the twentieth century was used for photography is, however, incorrect. The figures do not support it.
What is true is that photography was at times one of the largest—and in some years the single largest—uses of silver. For 1979, a United States Geological Survey publication attributes approximately 39 per cent of silver consumption to photography. Other major uses included electronics, plated products, jewellery and silverware.
Around the turn of the millennium, photographic demand for silver reached its peak. Depending on the calculation, the sector consumed roughly 220 to 270 million troy ounces worldwide each year. That represented approximately one quarter of total silver demand.
Those quantities did not disappear solely into family holiday photographs and artfully underexposed pictures made by ambitious amateurs. A substantial share was used for motion-picture film, medical X-rays, printing and reproduction, scientific imaging and other technical applications.
Some of the silver could be recovered during processing. Large laboratories collected silver-bearing residue from fixing baths and used film. This was motivated less by ecological idealism than by the value of the metal, but it fortunately led to the same result: not all of the silver disappeared down the drain.
With the arrival of digital photography and digital medical imaging, demand collapsed. An important industrial use of silver was reduced within a comparatively short time to a specialist niche.
Photography no longer needed silver. Silver will presumably have survived the rejection.
How a gelatin silver print is made
A traditional gelatin silver print is produced in the darkroom. The starting point is usually a developed black-and-white negative.
The negative is placed in an enlarger, which projects light through it onto photographic paper below. Pale areas of the negative allow more light to pass and later produce darker areas in the positive print. Dense areas hold back the light and result in lighter tones.
The photographer determines the crop, size, focus, exposure time and contrast. Test strips are usually exposed first to establish how long the paper should receive light.
The exposed paper is then placed in developer. Slowly, the image appears in the tray. For anyone familiar only with screens and inkjet printers, the moment still possesses a certain magic: shadows, bodies and faces emerge from an apparently empty sheet.
After development come a stop bath and the fixer. The fixer removes the light-sensitive silver compounds that were not developed. Only then can the image be safely viewed in normal light.
Finally, the print must be thoroughly washed. Chemical residue would threaten its permanence. A gelatin silver print is not automatically immortal simply because it contains silver. Traditional craftsmanship can also be ruined with impressive reliability through carelessness.
Fibre-based paper and the photographer’s patience
Many high-quality gelatin silver prints are made on fibre-based paper. Between the paper support and the light-sensitive emulsion is usually a bright coating of barium sulphate known as baryta. It creates an even surface, improves detail and contributes to the particular depth of the tonal range.
The paper absorbs water and processing chemicals. It must therefore be washed for a long time and dried carefully. While drying, it also has a habit of curling.
There is also resin-coated, or RC, paper. This can be processed more quickly, washed for less time and dried more easily. It is practical and dependable.
Many darkroom artists nevertheless prefer traditional fibre-based paper for its surface and physical presence. This preference is not entirely free from romance. Anyone who has tried to dry a large fibre print perfectly flat will know, however, that this particular romance has a distinctly disciplinary streak.
True gelatin silver papers are still manufactured today. Artists, specialist laboratories and dedicated darkroom photographers continue to use them. The gelatin silver print is therefore not an extinct historical process. It has simply disappeared from everyday photography.
The darkroom was never unprocessed
One persistent myth claims that an analogue print is a direct and unprocessed reproduction of the negative.
It is not.
The darkroom was a place of intensive image manipulation. The photographer decided on cropping, exposure, contrast, paper, developer and image tone. Individual areas could be brightened or darkened during exposure.
In dodging, part of the photographic paper was temporarily shielded from the light and therefore remained lighter. In burning, a selected area received additional exposure and became darker.
Photographers used their hands, pieces of card, wires and homemade masks. These tools had to be kept moving during exposure to avoid producing obvious hard edges. The icons for Dodge and Burn in modern editing software still refer to these darkroom tools.
Retouching, masking, multiple exposures, combinations of different negatives, local bleaching and chemical toning were also possible.
Analogue photography was never unprocessed. Its processing merely smelled different.
Completely different prints could therefore be made from the same negative. One might be soft and atmospheric, another hard and graphic. Shadows could be kept deep and closed or opened to reveal detail; highlights could appear brilliant or subdued.
The negative contained possibilities. The print turned some of those possibilities into an image.
Black and white was never entirely colourless
A gelatin silver print does not have to be completely neutral in tone. Paper, emulsion, developer and processing all influence the colour of the image.
A print may appear cool, neutral, warm, slightly brown or purplish. Gelatin silver prints can also be chemically toned.
Selenium toning may alter the blacks and, depending on the paper, produce a slight change in image colour. Under suitable conditions, it can also improve the stability of the image silver. Sepia toning generally produces warmer brown tones and may likewise affect chemical permanence.
The characteristic warm tone of a historical photograph is therefore not always merely the result of ageing. Sometimes it was intended from the beginning.
Black-and-white photography was never truly colourless. It was monochrome—and within that apparently narrow space, it possessed a remarkable range.
A necessary clarification about grain
A gelatin silver print consists of finely distributed metallic silver. Yet the visible photographic grain in an analogue enlargement comes primarily from the film negative.
During enlargement, the negative’s grain structure is projected onto the photographic paper. The faster the film and the greater the enlargement, the more clearly that structure may become visible.
When we add grain to a digital photograph, we are therefore primarily simulating the effect of analogue film and its enlargement—not simply the silver within the paper.
The distinction may sound like photographic pedantry, but it is correct. Just when one has found a pleasing poetic explanation, photochemistry enters the room, sits down at the table and demands a revision.
Why artists still do it
Artists still work with black-and-white film and make their prints in the darkroom. They do not necessarily do so because they are hostile to technology or because they have decided that 1983 should never have ended.
A handmade gelatin silver print possesses a material quality distinct from a pigment print. The image is not applied with ink. It arises through light and chemical development within the photographic layer.
Every print requires decisions. Dodging, burning and exposure times must be repeated. Skilled darkroom printers keep detailed notes to reproduce their results as closely as possible. Even so, every handmade print remains an individual object to some degree.
The slowness of the process also matters. Exposure, development, fixing, washing and drying cannot be accelerated indefinitely. The darkroom resists the contemporary expectation that every image must be seen, corrected and published immediately.
That does not automatically make the result better. It is entirely possible to produce a poor print in four hours—only with exceptional dedication.
Approaching the appearance digitally
A digital photograph can adopt the appearance of a gelatin silver print without actually being one.
This requires more than a black-and-white filter and a generous spoonful of grain. The tonal structure is crucial. Shadows need depth, but should not collapse thoughtlessly into empty black. Highlights should shine without losing all detail. The transitions between them are particularly important.
Local brightening and darkening assume the former roles of dodging and burning. Masks, curves and digital Dodge and Burn are not inventions of a tasteless digital age. They continue an older photographic practice with different tools.
A subtly warm or cool image tone may also appear more convincing than perfectly neutral computer grey. It should remain restrained enough to be felt rather than immediately identified.
The grain must suit the image. Uniformly applied standard noise rarely produces a convincing analogue effect. Grain should become part of the surface, not lie on it like dust on a freshly polished table.
Finally, the paper plays a decisive role. Modern baryta inkjet papers deliberately refer to traditional darkroom papers. They usually possess a smooth or lightly textured surface, deep blacks and fine reproduction of grey tones.
Matte cotton papers create a different effect. Their blacks are usually less deep, their white softer and the paper surface more noticeable. The photograph consequently approaches the character of a drawing or fine-art print.
Neither option is fundamentally superior. The question is not which paper is the most expensive or the most impressively described on the packaging.
The question is: Which paper belongs to this image?
What this has to do with my work
My photographs are created digitally. I record them as RAW files, develop and edit them myself and have them produced as contemporary prints.
I do not, therefore, make traditional gelatin silver prints. When I speak of a gelatin silver appearance, I do not mean technical identity, but aesthetic kinship.
That kinship begins with light. Many of my works refer to early twentieth-century black-and-white photography, to the formal rigour of František Drtikol and to a visual language in which shadow is not merely an absence of illumination, but an active part of the composition.
The body is not fully illuminated and explained. Light models certain areas while others disappear into darkness. The photograph does not show everything. It leaves viewers room to complete what is missing.
My editing also continues ideas developed in the darkroom. Local brightening and deepening, the direction of the gaze and the emphasis placed on particular lines of the body correspond in intention to dodging and burning an analogue print.
The added grain is intended to disrupt the flawless smoothness of the digital sensor. It does not claim that the image was photographed on film. It gives the surface structure and removes some of the sterile perfection that modern cameras and software so readily produce.
The raised black point and controlled softness deliberately distance the images from the aggressive brilliance of much contemporary digital photography. A raised black point does not, however, automatically correspond to a classic glossy gelatin silver print. High-quality baryta papers were capable of producing exceptionally deep blacks. My treatment is closer to matte papers, softer historical prints or the appearance of printmaking.
These decisions do not create a forgery of a historical process. They are a translation.
For black-and-white works that remain primarily photographic, baryta paper can be a sensible choice. It supports deep blacks, clear highlights and subtle tonal transitions.
For my works combining red-chalk notes, handwriting and the appearance of historical studies, however, a matte cotton rag paper is more coherent. There, the photograph should not sit on the page like a glossy laboratory print. It should join the drawing and writing to form a single object.
The cotton paper removes some of the digital image’s brilliance. In this context, that is not a deficiency, but part of the concept. The photograph takes a step back and approaches the character of a drawing.
Tradition without disguise
For many decades, the gelatin silver print was the central medium of black-and-white photography. It brought together light, chemistry, paper and craftsmanship.
It was never merely a neutral reproduction. In the darkroom, the photographer determined brightness, contrast, crop, local emphasis, surface and image tone.
Today, the same artistic questions can be pursued with digital tools. RAW development, curves, masks, Dodge and Burn, grain and the choice of paper perform tasks that already existed in another form in the darkroom.
The result remains form in the darkroom.
The a digital work. Its relationship to gelatin silver lies not in simulated chemistry, but in the way light, shadow, tone and surface are treated.
Perhaps this is the most meaningful way to engage with photographic tradition: not to disguise the old process superficially, but to understand what it taught us about images.
A digital pigment print does not have to be a gelatin silver print in order to learn from one.
It merely needs to be honest enough not to pretend that it is.
